When I started out and before we were officially People Feeding People, Inc., it was just me sharing about 100 sandwiches. Then, I realized I could do more with a little help from my family and friends. Once they joined in, their friends noticed and wanted to help, too.
The more we do, the more people notice and join us, and in turn, we are able to help even more people. Someday, some of the people we helped will remember us and reach out to help others, too. It is contagious! We share whatever we can gather with anyone who needs it.
In a short time, we have gone from offering ham sandwiches once a month to offering several meals, along with toiletries, contraceptives, feminine products, clothing, and bedding to hundreds each month in several North Texas counties; we partner with local businesses and other charities to make even more of an impact.
Of course, there are other organizations out there helping, too, but we step up to fill in the gaps. There are many who fall through the cracks of local and governmental assistance systems and although weekends are a popular time for charities to hit the streets to help, on weekdays there might be very little relief in sight.
Technical difficulties, improperly completed paperwork, lack of acceptable identification and transportation issues are just a few barriers that truly hungry people and families face when attempting to find services from other organizations. There are people suffering and we step in to help.
We offer a hand up - not a handout! With this attitude, we hit the streets at least twice a month in Tarrant County and provide a temporary reprieve for folks on the street. We also help with after-school programs, senior citizen programs, and other smaller charities that are in need. The smiles, music, personal care items, food, and other gifts we offer no-strings-attached services to whoever wants to join in. We strive to make personal connections and understand that the people we are helping are people just like us. So, of course, we treat them like we would treat our family and friends.
Our volunteers are genuinely there to help out of the kindness of their hearts. Our only agenda is to show people that we care about them, and we do that by smiling, socializing, singing, and feeding everyone who cares to join us. Together, one hour and one dollar at a time, we brighten others’ days, and it is a truly rewarding experience.
With the giving season headed our way, now is a great time to lend a hand. During holidays, donations tend to dwindle. So, I encourage you… please consider joining the People Feeding People, Inc., family and volunteer at an event or to help with administrative duties from home. Or, instead of a caffe latte, donate to PFP instead! For one dollar, we can provide snacks and a cold beverage. One dollar.
Together we can truly make a positive difference that helps our community become a better place for all.
